The Wells of Ladywell

There is a well in the crypt of St Mary's church in Marywell. It is a mystery when it was dug and why. There is a legend that the water sprung from the ground. It probably pre-dates the church and was an ancient sacred site. The monks of St Peter's of Ghent built their priory around here.

The second image is a bush on the site of a healing spring. It's form echos the image of a fountain. Similar forms are seen in decorations and carvings on the surrounding houses. Were the artists aware of the presence of the spring? It was discovered only recently. Click on the image of the bush to see the whole photo.
